Smoke Control Systems

Design, installation, service, and certification testing of smoke control systems — stairwell pressurization, atrium smoke exhaust, and zoned smoke management across Utah.

Overview

Smoke Control — Designed, Installed, Tested, Certified

Smoke control systems are among the most complex life safety systems in any building. They manage the movement of smoke during a fire — keeping exit paths clear, protecting occupants who shelter in place, and giving first responders the visibility they need. Because these systems integrate fans, dampers, building pressure, and the fire alarm system, they demand specialized design, integration, and testing expertise.

Powered Control Systems handles smoke control from design through certification. We develop the sequence of operations, design and install the controls — including the firefighter's smoke control panel (FSCS) and the fire alarm interfaces for detection, zoning, and fan and damper control — and program the system to match the approved design. On new construction and renovations, we coordinate with the engineer of record, the mechanical contractor, and the building automation system (BAS) provider so the fans and dampers respond exactly as the sequence requires.

We also perform the acceptance testing and the periodic testing, inspection, and certification that smoke control systems require under NFPA 92, International Building Code Section 909, and International Fire Code Section 909 — on systems we install and on systems installed by others. From stairwell pressurization and atrium smoke exhaust to zoned smoke control and combination fire/smoke dampers, our team verifies that every component performs exactly as designed when it matters most. When testing turns up a deficiency, we service and repair the controls and field devices, then re-test to confirm compliance.

PCS also provides predictive modeling based on our testing data — helping you anticipate component wear, budget for upcoming requirements, and avoid the surprise failures that lead to costly emergency service and failed inspections.

Why Choose PCS

The PCS Difference

Design & Installation

We develop the sequence of operations, design and install the smoke control panels, relays, and field devices, including the firefighter's smoke control panel (FSCS), and program the system to match the approved design.

Coordinated System Integration

Smoke control depends on the fire alarm, mechanical equipment, and building automation working as one. We integrate detection and zoning with fan and damper controls and coordinate with the mechanical contractor and BAS provider.

Testing, Service & Certification

Our team performs full-spectrum operational testing, inspection, and certification of smoke control systems to NFPA 92 and IBC 909 requirements — and services and repairs the deficiencies that testing uncovers.

Complex System Expertise

Atrium exhaust, stairwell pressurization, zoned control, elevator hoistway pressurization — we work across the full range of smoke control configurations, from design through testing.

Best in Class Predictive Modeling

We compile analytics from prior inspections and have highly accurate predictive models that allow us to cut down on catastrophic failures, and help in budgeting to meet particular yearly inspection mandates.

Code Expertise

Deep familiarity with Utah's adopted editions of NFPA 92, IBC Section 909, and the IFC means your system is designed, tested, and documented right the first time.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The International Fire Code (Section 909.22 in the 2021 edition adopted in Utah) requires periodic operational testing of smoke control systems: dedicated systems semi-annually and non-dedicated (HVAC-integrated) systems at least annually. Acceptance testing at installation is governed by IBC Section 909.18 and NFPA 92. Your AHJ may set additional requirements. PCS provides scheduled testing programs that keep your system compliant.

A dedicated smoke control system uses equipment installed solely for smoke control purposes. A non-dedicated system shares components with the building's normal HVAC system, switching into a smoke control mode during an alarm. Non-dedicated systems are more common but require more comprehensive testing because the same equipment serves dual purposes. PCS works with both types, from design and installation through testing and certification.

Smoke control systems are governed primarily by NFPA 92 (Standard for Smoke Control Systems), International Building Code Section 909, and the International Fire Code. Smoke control panels must be UL 864 UUKL listed. PCS is well-versed in the Utah-adopted editions of these codes and the specific design, testing, and documentation requirements they impose.

Yes. PCS tests, inspects, and certifies smoke control systems regardless of who originally installed them. We can also assess existing systems for code compliance, identify deficiencies, and document findings for your records and AHJ submission. If repairs are needed, our team can service the system and re-test it to confirm compliance.

Yes. PCS designs and installs smoke control systems for new construction and renovations. We develop the sequence of operations; design, install, and program the firefighter's smoke control panel (FSCS); and integrate the fire alarm system's detection and zoning with fan and damper controls. We coordinate with the engineer of record, the mechanical contractor who installs the fans and ductwork, and the building automation system provider, then commission the system through acceptance testing with the AHJ and special inspector. After occupancy, PCS can keep the system compliant with ongoing service and periodic testing.
